Did you know that it is also possible to recycle organic waste? In addition to the dry recyclable materials that we send for selective collection, the leftovers we produce when preparing food can also be used through composting techniques.
Composting is a biological process of decomposition and recycling of organic matter, such as peels and leftovers from fruits, vegetables, legumes and other food waste. The process takes place in a controlled system that inhibits the proliferation of vectors and bad odors, and may or may not have the presence of oxygen, and with or without the help of means that accelerate the process - such as the famous Californian earthworms.
The result is a stabilized organic compound rich in nutrients, which can be used to improve the soil or enhance plant growth. In addition to the solid part, the process also results in a liquid biofertilizer that must be diluted for application to the roots.
The advantages of having a compost bin are multiple, such as:
- Reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills, increasing its useful life and contributing to the sustainable development of the planet;
- If you have a vegetable garden, the products resulting from this process are excellent fertilizers to enhance the growth of your plants without the addition of chemicals;
- Reduces the proliferation of vectors in areas intended for waste storage, making environments cleaner and contributing to public health safety;
- Contribution to climate change, since in the composting process only CO₂, water and biomass are formed, in this process there is no formation of methane gas, which is very common in landfills and has a greenhouse effect 28 times more powerful than CO₂.
Composting can be applied at condominium level, through composting beds in the soil, prefabricated composters capable of receiving a larger daily quantity or even by hiring a third-party company specialized in this process.
Furthermore, the processing of organic matter can be carried out individually, using domestic composters that provide compact recovery of this waste within homes.
